Shop lock repairs

Shop lock repairs are the repair or replacement of the locks that secure a commercial door or shutter. That includes euro cylinders, hookbolt and deadlock cases, floor locks on glass doors, shutter locks and keeps, along with rekeying after lost keys or a change of staff.

Locksmith fitting a hook lock to an aluminium door

How do you know you need this?

You need this if a key is stiff or has snapped, the bolt does not throw fully, the door only locks when lifted, or the lock turns without engaging. Lost keys, a staff change, a new tenant or signs of attempted entry are other reasons. Check your policy too, since some insurers set minimum lock conditions, and a lock that fails at closing time leaves the premises exposed.

What do we fix?

Snapped key or seized cylinderThe broken key or cylinder is removed and a new cylinder is fitted, with spare keys set up for you.
Hookbolt not engagingThe bolt may be worn, or the door may have dropped out of line with the keep. We fix the alignment as well as the lock.
Cylinder change and rekeyingAfter lost keys or a change of staff, a new cylinder is usually enough to shut out old keys.
Glass door locksFloor locks and patch locks on frameless doors are repaired or replaced to suit the glass thickness and floor.
Locks damaged in a break-inA door that cannot lock is treated as an emergency, through our 24/7 line.
Keyed-alike and master key setsSeveral doors can be set to one key, or to a master key for a manager.

How much does a shop lock repair cost?

A shop lock repair or replacement costs £125 to £345 ex VAT per lock. The lock type matters most, as a plain cylinder costs less than a hookbolt case or a floor lock. If we cannot identify it from photos of the door edge, we book a charged diagnostic visit, from £125 ex VAT, and that cost is agreed with you before we set off.

Guide prices exclude VAT. Your repair price, including any visit charge, is confirmed before work starts.

How does the job run?

  1. Show us the lock

Send photos of the door edge, the cylinder and the keep, with the door open if it will open.

  2. Identify the fix

We work out whether a cylinder, a lock case or an alignment repair is what the door needs.

  3. Replace and align

The worn part is replaced and the door is adjusted so that the bolt throws cleanly.

  4. Check every key

Each key is tried with the door open and closed, and spares are handed over to you.

Common questions

Do I need a new lock or just a new cylinder?

Often just a new cylinder. If keys are lost or the key is stiff, changing the cylinder usually solves it. If the bolt is worn, the case is bent or the door has been forced, the lock case needs replacing, which we confirm from photos or a visit.

What lock do I need for my insurance?

Your policy decides that, so read the security conditions or ask your broker. Some policies name BS 3621 locks or set other terms. We can tell you what is fitted and what the door can take, but the insurer decides whether it meets their conditions.

A lock was damaged in a break-in. What should I do?

Call our 24/7 emergency line, because a door that cannot lock is an emergency, and we'll tell you the arrival time when you call. We can provide photos and an itemised invoice for your insurer, but only they can decide whether a claim is paid.

Can you fit a stronger lock to an aluminium door?

Often yes, within the limits of the door's stile. Narrow aluminium stiles restrict the size of case they can take, so we measure before ordering. A three-star cylinder and a good hookbolt are common improvements, and a stronger keep can help too.

Can I lock a fire exit at night?

Only while the building is empty. Whenever people are inside, an emergency door must open without a key. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 sets this in England and Wales, and Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own fire safety law.
