Repairs and maintenance
Roller shutter repairs
Roller shutter repairs are repairs to the curtain, guides, barrel, motor, controls and locks of a shop security shutter. The aim is to get a stuck, damaged or unreliable shutter running and locking again, without the cost of replacing the whole unit.

How do you know you need this?
You need a repair if the shutter stops part way, runs crooked, jumps out of its guides, grinds or bangs, or only works after several presses. Bent laths, a motor that hums without moving and a key switch or remote that has stopped responding are other common signs. If a shutter feels unstable, stop using it, because a curtain that drops out of control can injure someone.
What do we fix?
How much do roller shutter repairs cost?
A roller shutter repair costs £125 to £695 ex VAT for most repairs. A few damaged laths or a control fault sit at the lower end, and a new motor towards the top. If a video of the shutter running does not show the cause, we book a charged diagnostic visit, from £125 ex VAT. You are told that figure before we come out.
Guide prices exclude VAT. Your repair price, including any visit charge, is confirmed before work starts.
What is the specification?
| Product standard | BS EN 13241 for shutters and industrial doors |
|---|---|
| Safety in use | BS EN 12453 for power-operated doors |
| Workplace law, Great Britain | Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 18: powered doors need features to prevent trapping |
| Curtain types | Solid, perforated or punched laths in galvanised steel or aluminium, and tube-and-link grilles |
| Drive | Tubular or external motors on most powered shop shutters, usually with a manual override |
| Planning, England | External shutters often need planning permission; a like-for-like repair usually does not |
How does the job run?
Send a video
Film the shutter running, or trying to run, and note any noise, fault light or damage.
Find the fault
We work out whether the curtain, the motor, the brake or the controls are responsible.
Repair the shutter
Laths, guides, motors or controls are replaced, and the limits are set again.
Run and lock
The shutter is cycled up and down, and we check that it locks and that any safety edge works.
Common questions
Can I open my shutter by hand if the motor fails?
Usually yes, if it has a manual override such as a crank handle or hand chain. Follow the maker's instructions and do not force it. If there is no override or the curtain has jammed, leave it alone, because forcing it can bend laths or drop the curtain.
Do I need planning permission to repair a shutter?
Usually not. A like-for-like repair in England does not normally need planning permission, although fitting a new external shutter often does. Changing the curtain type or the box could count as a change, so check first, as rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
A vehicle hit my shutter. Can it be repaired?
Often yes. Damaged laths can be replaced, but a bent barrel or distorted guides may need new parts or a new shutter. We can provide photos and an itemised invoice for an insurer, although the outcome of any claim is for them to decide.
How often should a shop roller shutter be serviced?
Follow the maker's or installer's instructions, because the interval depends on the shutter and how often it runs. Many owners book one planned service a year. Powered shutters at work premises must be kept safe, so a written service record is worth keeping.
Can you repair any make of shutter?
Many faults can be repaired on most makes, because laths, guides, motors and controls come from common component suppliers. Where a part has been discontinued, we look for a compatible alternative and tell you before ordering it.
