Repairs and maintenance

Aluminium frame repairs

Aluminium frame repairs are repairs to the extruded sections, joints, beads, gaskets and cover caps of an aluminium shopfront. Damaged lengths are straightened, cut out or replaced, joints are refixed and seals renewed, so the frame stays in place instead of the whole frontage being renewed.

Fitters installing a new aluminium shopfront frame

How do you know you need this?

You need this if the frame has been dented, has come away from the wall, rattles when the door closes, or has failed gaskets, open corners or loose cover caps. White powdery corrosion, bubbling paint and water at the cill are common warning signs. Impact from a vehicle or a forced entry can also twist a section, which then stops doors closing and puts stress on the glass.

What do we fix?

Impact damageLengths dented by vehicles, trolleys or forced entry are replaced, then finished to blend with the rest of the frame.
Opened cornersMitres and butt joints that have opened are drawn back together, refixed and sealed.
Failed gaskets and beadsShrunken gaskets and loose beads let in water and allow the glass to move. We strip them out and fit new.
Corrosion and finish failureBubbling or thread-like filiform corrosion is cleaned back to sound metal and refinished, or the section is replaced.
Water getting inBlocked weep holes, failed seals and poor cill joints are traced and put right.
Loose fixingsFrames working loose from the wall are refixed, with isolation between aluminium and other metals where needed.

How much do aluminium frame repairs cost?

Aluminium frame repairs cost £195 to £995 ex VAT for most repairs. The section profile decides much of the price, because an old or discontinued profile is harder to match than a standard one, and new lengths may need colour matching. If photos cannot show the extent of the damage, we arrange a charged diagnostic visit, from £125 ex VAT, and confirm that price beforehand.

Guide prices exclude VAT. Your repair price, including any visit charge, is confirmed before work starts.

How does the job run?

  1. Photograph the damage

Send close-ups and a photo from across the street so that we can see the section and the whole frontage.

  2. Match the section

We identify the profile and find a matching or compatible length, with a colour to suit.

  3. Cut out and repair

Damaged lengths come out, the joints and seals are renewed, and the glass is packed correctly.

  4. Finish and check

New sections are finished, doors are checked for alignment and the frame is sealed to the wall.

Common questions

Can a dented aluminium frame be straightened?

Sometimes, if the dent is shallow and the section has not split. Hollow sections often cannot be pushed back cleanly, so a damaged length is usually cut out and replaced. We can then refinish the new piece to blend with the rest.

Can you match an old aluminium section?

Often, though not always exactly. Many shopfront profiles are common and remain available, while older ones may be discontinued. We look for a matching or compatible section, and if none exists, a folded cover piece or a new length of frame may be the answer.

Can a corroded aluminium frame be saved?

Usually yes, if the corrosion is on the surface. We remove loose material, treat it and refinish the area. Frames that have lost strength around fixings, corners or the cill need the affected section replacing, and we will tell you which applies.

Do you need to take the glass out to repair the frame?

Not always. Cover caps, gaskets and small sections can often be changed with the glass in place. Larger repairs need the glass out, and we include any temporary boards in the price. Toughened panes cannot be reworked, so they are handled with care.

A vehicle has hit my shopfront. Can I claim for the frame?

You may be able to, but your insurer or the driver's insurer decides. We can provide photos and an itemised invoice for them, though we cannot promise a claim will be paid. Report the incident and get the vehicle details before any repairs start.
