Repairs and maintenance
Automatic door repairs
Automatic door repairs are repairs to the powered operator, sensors, track, rollers, belts and controllers of a sliding or swing entrance door. The work gets the door running again and checks that its safety devices still stop or reverse it in line with BS EN 16005.

How do you know you need this?
You need a repair if the door will not open, stays open, stutters, reverses for no reason, runs noisily, drags at the floor guide or shows a fault light. A door that closes on people, or no longer reacts when someone stands in the opening, should be taken out of automatic use straight away. Sensor, belt and roller wear tend to show up first as erratic running.
What do we fix?
How much do automatic door repairs cost?
Automatic door repairs cost £165 to £895 ex VAT for most repairs. A sensor or belt usually costs less than a controller or drive unit, and parts for older makes vary. Most faults need the door testing on site, so expect a charged diagnostic visit, from £125 ex VAT, unless a video shows the problem clearly. We state the visit cost before booking you in.
Guide prices exclude VAT. Your repair price, including any visit charge, is confirmed before work starts.
What is the specification?
| Safety standard | BS EN 16005 for power-operated pedestrian doorsets |
|---|---|
| Trapping, Great Britain | Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, regulation 18, requires features that prevent injury by trapping |
| Power failure | Regulation 18 also calls for manual operation where safety needs it, unless the door opens automatically when power fails |
| Escape routes, England | Approved Document B expects a fail-safe opening arrangement or a swing door alongside |
| Clear width, England | Approved Document M: 1000 mm in new buildings, 775 mm in existing ones |
| Door types | Sliding, swing and folding operators, including low-energy swing |

Sensors, belts, rollers, drives or controllers are replaced, with the parts priced before fitting.

Common questions
Can I use my automatic door by hand while it is broken?
Usually yes, if the door has a manual or off setting, but follow the maker's instructions. Some doors push open by hand when switched off, while others stay locked. Check you still have a usable escape route before trading with it out of action.
Is it safe to keep using an automatic door that stops or reverses?
Not if it is touching people or ignoring someone in the doorway. Switch it off and keep it out of use until it has been checked. Intermittent faults are often in the sensors, which are also the door's main safety devices.
Do automatic doors have to be serviced by law?
No single fixed legal interval applies, but the law expects them to be kept safe. In Great Britain, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 require such equipment to be maintained in working order. Maker's instructions and BS EN 16005 guide what gets checked.
Can you repair any make of automatic door?
Many faults can be repaired across common makes, because sensors, belts and rollers are widely available. Some controllers and drives are specific to one maker, and older ones may be discontinued. We check parts first and tell you if the operator needs replacing.
What if my automatic door was damaged in a break-in?
Call the 24/7 emergency line if the entrance cannot be secured, and we'll tell you the arrival time when you call. Damaged glass, track or operators are then priced as a repair. We can provide photos and an itemised invoice, but only your insurer can decide on a claim.
