New shopfronts
Shopfront refurbishment and refits
A shopfront refurbishment is a planned refit of an existing frontage: keeping sound frames, glass or structure and replacing or refinishing the rest, such as the door, fascia, stall riser, signs and paint or powder coat. It sits between a one-off repair and a full new shopfront.

When is this the right choice?
Refurbishment is the right choice when the frame is structurally sound but the frontage looks tired, the door is failing or the brand has changed. It suits new tenants on a short lease, landlords preparing a unit to let, and retailers rolling out a new look. If frames are corroded, rotten or badly out of square, a new front is usually better value.
What are the options?
How much does a shopfront refurbishment cost?
A shopfront refurbishment usually costs £1,495 to £6,995 ex VAT depending on what is kept. The price follows the scope: how much frame can stay, how many panes change, whether the door and floor spring are replaced, and the size of the new fascia. On-site spraying, out-of-hours working and access equipment add cost. For full refurbishments, you get a free survey and a written fixed quote.
Guide prices exclude VAT. Your written quote is fixed after survey.
What is the specification?
| Survey | Free survey and written fixed quote for full refurbishments |
|---|---|
| Frame recoat | Site-applied coating, or stripped and powder coated off site |
| Glass | Safety glass to BS EN 12150 or BS EN 14449 in critical locations |
| Door control | Floor spring or overhead closer to BS EN 1154 |
| Typical lead time | 2 to 6 weeks from order, depending on scope (typical range) |
How does the job run?
Assess what can stay
We check frames, glass, door gear and fascia, then separate what can be kept from what needs replacing.
Agree the scope
You get an itemised scope covering finishes, glass, door and signs, with any consent needs flagged.
Prepare and protect
The frontage is cleaned and masked, and the shop is protected from dust and overspray.
Refit and hand over
New parts go in, coatings cure and the door is adjusted, with snags cleared before handover.
Common questions
Is it cheaper to refurbish or replace a shopfront?
Refurbishing is usually cheaper if the frame and structure are sound, because less has to be stripped out and remade. If the frame is corroded, rotten or out of square, the saving disappears. We assess the frontage at survey and tell you which route makes more sense.
Does a shopfront refurbishment need planning permission?
Often not for like-for-like work in England, but a change that materially alters the frontage usually does. New illuminated signs can need advertisement consent, and listed buildings need listed building consent for many changes. Rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, so check before work begins.
Can I refurbish a shopfront while still trading?
Yes, on most jobs. We phase the work so the door stays usable, or do the noisy and messy parts out of hours, overnight or at weekends. Some stages, such as spraying, need a clear area, and we agree those dates with you.
Can you change the colour of my existing aluminium frames?
Yes. Existing powder-coated frames can be cleaned, prepared and resprayed in place in a RAL colour of your choice. Surface preparation decides how long the new finish lasts. Badly corroded sections may need to come out for stripping and recoating.
Who pays for a shopfront refit, landlord or tenant?
That depends on your lease. Many leases make the tenant responsible for the frontage, while others leave it with the landlord or require the landlord's consent to alterations. Read the repair and alterations clauses, or ask your solicitor, before booking the work.
