Repairs and maintenance

Shop sign repairs

Shop sign repairs are repairs to a fascia sign, lightbox, built-up letters or projecting sign on a commercial frontage. The work covers failed lighting, loose fixings, cracked panels, faded faces and water damage, so the sign stays safe, legible and properly lit without a full replacement.

Technician replacing LED modules in a lightbox sign

How do you know you need this?

You need a repair if part of the sign is dark or flickering, letters are loose, a panel has cracked or slipped, water has got inside the lightbox, or the face has faded and peeled. Movement in wind is the fault to deal with first, because a loose sign over a public footway is a safety risk. Stop using any sign that shows burn marks or trips the electrics.

What do we fix?

LED and lighting failureLED modules and drivers are tested and replaced, and failed sections of a lightbox are brought back to an even light.
Loose or fallen lettersBuilt-up letters are refixed with suitable fixings, and missing letters can be remade to match.
Cracked panelsBroken acrylic faces and damaged tray panels are replaced, with graphics reapplied where needed.
Water in a lightboxFailed seals let water reach the electrics. We dry the box, repair the seals and check the wiring.
Projecting sign bracketsCorroded or loose brackets are repaired or replaced, and fixings into the wall are checked.
Faded or peeling graphicsVinyl and printed faces can be stripped and replaced without changing the sign tray.

How much do shop sign repairs cost?

A shop sign repair costs £125 to £695 ex VAT for most repairs. Failed drivers and loose letters sit towards the lower end, while panel replacement, access towers or work above a busy footway add to it. Daytime and night photos usually help us price it. If an electrical fault needs tracing, a charged diagnostic visit, from £125 ex VAT, comes first, and we state its cost up front.

Guide prices exclude VAT. Your repair price, including any visit charge, is confirmed before work starts.

What is the specification?

Sign standardBS 559-1 covers design, manufacture and installation of signs

AccessWork at Height Regulations 2005 apply; a scaffold over the footway usually needs a highway licence

How does the job run?

  1. Photograph the sign

Send photos by day and, if it is lit, after dark, so that the failed sections show up.

  2. Check it is safe

A loose or moving sign is dealt with first, and the area beneath is kept clear.

  3. Repair or replace parts

Drivers, modules, panels, letters or brackets are replaced, with electrical work tested as it is done.

  4. Test the sign

Lighting and fixings are checked, and the sign is left clean and weather-sealed.

Common questions

Do I need advertisement consent to repair my sign?

Usually not, if the repair keeps the same size, position and lighting. Changing the sign or adding illumination can need consent under the 2007 Regulations in England, especially in conservation areas, and the rules differ in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Can you replace only the letters that have failed?

Yes, in many cases a single built-up letter or LED module can be replaced. Older letters may be hard to match in colour and depth, particularly once the rest have faded. We will tell you if the new part is likely to stand out.

Can a fluorescent lightbox be converted to LED?

Usually yes, by replacing the tubes and control gear with LED modules and a driver. The existing box and face stay in place. Check first whether the sign has consent as an illuminated sign, because brighter lighting can raise a consent question.

Who is responsible if a loose sign falls?

Usually the business or landlord that owns or controls the sign, and your lease should say which. In England, the 2007 Regulations require sign structures to be kept in a condition that does not endanger the public. Keep people clear until it is secured.

Will my insurance cover storm damage to a sign?

It may, depending on your policy, and only your insurer can say. We can provide photos and an itemised invoice for them to consider, but we cannot promise a claim will be paid. Check whether the sign is listed on your policy before work starts.
