Floor springs

A floor spring is a hydraulic door closer housed in a box set into the floor, with the door turning on its spindle and on a top pivot. Covered by BS EN 1154, it leaves the door face clear, which suits frameless glass and double-action shop doors.

Where does it work well?

Frameless glass entrances, double-action doors and busy shop doors where an overhead closer would look wrong, and heavy doors that need a controlled closing speed without arm hardware.

Pros

  • Hidden from view
  • Handles heavy doors
  • Supports double-action doors
  • Adjustable closing and latching speed

Cons

  • Needs a recess in the floor
  • Water and grit can reach the box
  • Replacement means lifting the door off

How long does it last?

Typically many years, though busy doors, wet floors and heavy leaves wear them out sooner.

What should you check when buying?

Size the spring to the door's width and weight using the EN power sizes, and check the box depth against the floor construction. Ask about hold-open, delayed action and spare parts. For fire doors, only use a model tested with that door.

Common questions

How do I know what size floor spring I need?

Go by the door's width and weight against the EN power sizes in BS EN 1154. Remember glass is heavy: 12 mm toughened weighs about 30 kg per square metre, so a large door may need a higher size than expected.

Can a floor spring be fitted to any floor?

Not always. The box needs enough depth in the slab or screed, and underfloor heating or services can get in the way. On a suspended floor, the fixing needs thinking through before ordering.
