Glass

Fire-rated glass

Fire-rated glass is glass tested to resist fire for a stated time when installed in a matching frame. BS EN 13501-2 classes it as integrity (E), integrity with reduced radiant heat (EW), or integrity with insulation (EI). Older test evidence often refers to BS 476-22.

Where does it work well?

Doors and screens on escape routes, units sharing walls with stair lobbies, glazing near a boundary and other positions where the fire strategy says glazing must resist fire, rather than general display windows.

Pros

  • Keeps vision through fire-rated screens
  • Available with insulation ratings
  • Can be used in tested FD30 and FD60 door sets

Cons

  • Only valid in a tested frame and gasket system
  • Heavy and costly in insulating grades
  • Cannot be altered on site

How long does it last?

Typically long-lived, but the fire rating depends on the glass, frame and seals all staying in their tested state.

What should you check when buying?

Ask for test evidence covering the glass, frame, seals and size together, not just the glass. Check that the duration and class match the fire strategy or risk assessment. Replacement panes must be the same tested product, so record the make and type.

Common questions

Can I replace a fire-rated pane with ordinary toughened glass?

No. The rating relies on the tested glass, beads and seals working together, so a different glass can leave the screen non-compliant. Check the etched mark, then replace it with a product tested in that frame or door.

What is the difference between E, EW and EI glass?

E means integrity, so flames and hot gases are held back. EW adds a limit on radiated heat, and EI adds insulation so that the far side stays much cooler. The fire strategy decides which class you need.
